The Sierra Nevada Wood and Lumber Company operated in the Incline Village area and built the SNW&L Incline Railway. The great mining boom of the 1800s necessitated the need for lumber. Timber cut around the Lake Tahoe area was put onto the railway and moved up 1,400 feet and then sent down the eastern side of the mountain by a gravity flume.
